Solid foundations to be selected for pioneering AIMC4 Project

The £6.4m AIMC4 initiative has now reached one of the most significant stages of the programme to date.

The consortium leading the project is now liaising with suppliers across the country to source the very best innovations and products that will prove key to delivering its groundbreaking goal; homes that achieve energy level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes – without relying on renewable technologies.

Since its launch last November (2009), the Government supported AIMC4 initiative has been making monumental progress and is on schedule to have all suppliers onboard by April and commence construction works as early as this summer.

With the core aim to meet sustainable housing requirements by focusing on the actual fabric of the building rather than add-ons, the initiative will produce twelve world-class energy efficient, innovative homes across the UK. These will be sold to consumers then monitored and evaluated to increase understanding of fabric performance, emission levels and gain valuable customer feedback.

At this crucial stage, the consortium is focusing on finding the very best of Britain to help devise unique, innovative solutions for key areas of the build system, which are vital to ensure the final product meets the low carbon, low energy objectives. These core elements include the reduction of heat loss and uncontrolled air leakage, and increasing space heating and hot water generation or storage. The project also requires the team to develop ways to improve passive solar gain; progress the accuracy of controlling space heating, ventilation and /or heating; and increase the efficiency of artificial lighting.

The consortium pioneering the AIMC4 project comprises some of the industry’s leading organisations including Stewart Milne Group, Crest Nicholson Plc and Barratt Developments Plc, plus H+H UK Ltd, BRE and Oxford Brookes University.
